Music of the 1920's
In the 1920's there were many types of music. There was jazz, musical numbers, Irish jigs, gospel, and blues. One widely known artist known for writing and performing jazz is Louis Armstrong. Louis Armstrong wrote the best known jazz song, "What a wonderful world" It was known then and it's still known today. Some other popular bands known for jazz are Ted Lewis' band, Paul Whiteman, and Abe Lyman. Louis Armstrong was an American jazz performer who was best known for playing the trumpet. Ted Lewis was an American entertainer who was best known for combining jazz and comedy. Abe Lyman was a leader for a popular orchestra in the 1920s that traveled in America and parts of Europe playing jazz. Before jazz came up people danced to Irish Jigs. This is one of those moments when other cultures of music influence American music as immigrants came into America. People also paid $3.50 to go and watch people perform in these things called musicals. Musicals were very popular and performed in New York on a street called Broadway. There were many dark colored musicians that sang gospel music. They were all of the christian faith. Blues was also widely known. Other music from other countries began to influence the American culture of music. By the end of the 1920s jazz music started to die and was replaced by a type of music called swing. That was the end of the jazz musical era.

Movies of the 1920s
With the rise in music in the 1920s is also led to a rise in movie production. Movies allowed people to go see the new technology of cameras. The film industry began in 1923 when they were commercially produced. In 1923 is also when they started using sound in movies. Movies entertained people and lifted spirits after World War one. The first movie theaters were called Nickelodeons. They were bigger and more fancy than the average theaters today. One very famous actress was Louise Brooks. Louise Brooks was an American actress who was famous for her role in Pandora's Box. There were more movies then Pandora's Box. There were movies such as The Jazz Singer. They developed the use of sound and picture for movies during this time. They were still experimenting with color during this time. Each year during the 20s the film industry, specifically Metro-Goldwyn studios and Warner Bros., made at least 800 films a year. In the year 1924 Ruldolph Valentino and Charlie Chaplin created the cartoon Mickey Mouse and it's still famous today. They first created silent films but as time progressed they began to use sound. It became more interesting. Some theaters began to fill up with more and more people as movies became more advanced, used more sound, and had picture. By 1927 85% of the world's movie productions came from Hollywood. At the end of the 1920s movies began to go international and play in other theaters across Europe.

Why I chose this subject
I chose this subject because it never talks about the movie industry in any of the history books I read. It also doesn't talk much about the music industry in any of the history books. I wanted to get an in depth look on the types of music and movies they created during the 1920s and up.
